The Divine Visitor was the title given to an otherworldly entity who controlled Edge during Panzer Dragoon Saga. Although the inhabitants of the Panzer Dragoon world did not realize it, the Divine Visitor actually came from the outside world. Team Andromeda added the Divine Visitor as a plot device intended to break the fourth wall, allowing the player to participate in Panzer Dragoon Saga’s story by assuming the role of the Divine Visitor.

Bibliography[]

Edge's Resurrection[]

In Panzer Dragoon Saga, the Divine Visitor first influenced the Panzer Dragoon world after that game’s introduction in which Edge had been shot for dead by Zastava. A white orb hovered against an orange background, the same texture as Sestren. Players are required to enter the name of “the one who controls Edge”. The name that they enter becomes relevant again at the end of the game. Once the player enters a name, a full motion video sequence takes place showing a white orb descending into the cavern and touching the water below, lighting up the walls. Edge’s unconscious (or dead) body, immersed in the water, absorbed the particles of light which brought the boy back to life. Edge quickly swam to the surface and looked around, amazed that he was alive.

Gash's Search for the Divine Visitor[]

The Divine Visitor was next mentioned when Edge traveled with Gash to the village of Cainus. Gash told Edge that he was searching for someone “known only as the Divine Visitor”, revealing that the Seekers did not know of any other name for the Divine Visitor. However it is possible that Gash thought that the dragon was the Divine Visitor at this point, but was hiding this information from Edge. Gash also revealed that the name ‘Divine Visitor’ was written in Ancient records, implying that the Divine Visitor existed in some form outside the events of Panzer Dragoon Saga but also in other time periods. As Gash told Edge about the Divine Visitor he looked up into the sky at an angle facing the viewer, as if Team Andromeda were hinting at something.

Descent into Uru Underground Ruins[]

When Edge is separated from his dragon, players see a white orb descending from above into the cavern below. While not confirmed, it is consistent that this was the Divine Visitor's white orb sent to protect Edge once again.

Mistaken for the Dragon[]

Gash next mentioned the Divine Visitor after Edge arrived at the Seekers’ Stronghold. He told Edge that dragons were in the Ancient Age and that the Divine Visitor was the dragon itself, again linking the Divine Visitor to the old world. Zadoc, a compiler of the Seekers, reiterated Gash’s view, telling Edge that, “We knew something would appear to free us from the Tower’s will. It wasn’t until recently that we discovered what would save us. Your dragon is our salvation.”

However, the Seekers were mistaken. The dragon was not the Divine Visitor. The dragon revealed to Edge at the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga that he was not the Divine Visitor, but existed to lead the Divine Visitor.

A New Beginning[]

The Divine Visitor’s role was to free the world from the will of the Ancients by destroying one half of the dragon, known by fans as the Heresy Program. At the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga, the dragon calls the Divine Visitor by the name the player entered at the start of game, followed by the statement, “You are the Divine Visitor.” The player was no longer simply one who controlled Edge, but a participant in the story. The dragon then told the Divine Visitor to push the button “for a new beginning” which players then must do to continue. It does not matter which button the player presses on their controller, however.

The dragon thanked the Divine Visitor, telling the player that he must go. Edge looked towards the screen and said, “So, you were guiding me… Then you must be the Divine…”. The dragon and Edge disappeared into the distance as the player’s line of sight shrunk and then narrowed, blackness filling the screen.

Cameo on Game Over screen[]

If players are defeated, the Divine Visitor's white orb can be seen on Panzer Dragoon Saga's Game Over screen. If players choose to continue, the presence of the white orb may represent Edge being resurrected once again.
