Dragons are a class of powerful of pure-type creatures that were designed by the Ancients to guard the Towers. Dragons contain a bioluminary oscillator, an organ which can convert energy drawn from through the body into streams of light that can be expelled through the dragon's mouth. These biolasers can lock onto multiple targets simultaneously and destroy enemies.[1]
Name[]
According to Panzer Dragoon Orta's encyclopedia, the name dragon unit is "derived from the fear and respect elicited by the ancient world."[2]
Population[]
Only a very small number of unique dragon units have been confirmed by historians of the Panzer Dragoon world.[2]
As pure-types, dragons were designed without the ability to reproduce, but instead to adapt themselves to participate in missions that span thousands of years via self-evolution.[3]
Origin[]
During Panzer Dragoon Saga, Azel and Edge travel to Uru Underground Ruins where dragons were created.
Purpose[]
As guardians of the Towers[]
According to the Old Diary of Skiad Ops Lundi, one dragon is posted at each Tower. The creators of the Towers feared resistance and created dragons to guard their creations. These guardian dragons continue to perform this duty "for over a millenium". He argues that the only power comparable to that of dragons is other dragons.[4]
As destroyer of the Towers[]
Lundi argues that the heresy dragon is an exception to rule about dragons protecting the Towers. The heresy dragon is the only dragon which exists to destroy the Towers. Because of this difference, all other dragons can be considered enemies of the heresy dragon.[5]
For a particular rider[]
Dragons appear to be commonly designed to exist for a particular rider whom they share a bond with. When Edge told Azel to take his dragon if he should not make it, Azel told him that it didn't work like that because his dragon would lose its purpose without him. However, the rider can survive and continue to have a purpose, since Azel was able to continue on without Atolm. Panzer Dragoon Orta's encyclopedia theorises that dragons require a rider for completeness as a safeguard to "an otherwise perfect and all-powerful being."[6]
Folklore[]
Dragons were given a mythical status by the inhabitants of the Panzer Dragoon world. The legends and scripture of Elpis describe a dragon, which Lundi refers to as a fairy tale.[7]
While visiting Cainus, Gash tells Edge that among the Seekers, dragons are seen as messengers of the gods, but that he personally does not believe this because he doesn't believe in the gods. He also informed Edge that the Empire believed that dragons were demons who rose from hell, leaving the Ancient Age in ruins. The people of Zoah believed that there was a dragon who was a messenger of the gods.[8]
The Solider Guide of the Empire acknowledges that people of the frontier worship dragons as messengers of the gods, but argues that this is baseless superstition and that dragons are just monsters with a variety of destructive abilities.[9]
The Empire's goal to capture a dragon[]
A goal of the Empire was to capture a dragon "at all costs" to solve the mysteries surrounding the Towers.[9] When Edge is captured by the Empire inside the Tower, the Seventh Emperor announces that he plans to perform some unpleasant experiments on Edge in order to find out how to control a dragon.
Anti dragons[]
- Main article: Anti dragons
In Sestren, Edge and his dragon encounter dragon forms similar to his own dragon called anti dragons. Sestren itself takes on a dragon form similar to the Blue Dragon.
Dragonmares[]
- Main article: Dragonmare
After the Great Fall, there were no reported sightings of a dragon in the decades leading up to the events of Panzer Dragoon Orta.[10] However, using the power of the Cradle, the Empire was able to engineer their own dragon type called a dragonmare.[11]
