The Frontier is generally defined as a “wide area on the northern part of the Continent . . .[which] holds some small nations that are not connected to either the Empire or Meccania.”[1] The Frontier is also described as "span[ning] the middle region of the Continent."
The majority of information that we have regarding the Frontier is derived from the Panzer Dragoon II Zwei guidebook Die Welt von Panzer Dragoon Zwei.
Like the rest of the Continent, the Frontier is home to a large number of Ancient Age ruins in various states of activity.
It is unknown what the Frontier’s ecology looked like after The Great Fall.
Hunter Tribes[]
Hunter Tribes have inhabited the Frontier region of the Continent, presumably, since the foundation of the Empire and perhaps even before. Hunter tribes survive on the frontier through a variety of means, including selling Pure-Type Monster exoskeletons and organs.
Hunters also perform their own excavations into Ancient Age ruins to locate artifacts to aid in their own survival, or to sell to the larger nations of the Continent. During the Imperial Prosperity Period this put these frontier hunters in conflict with the Empire, due to the 3rd Emperor’s proclamation that all Ancient Age technology is property of the Empire.
It can be assumed, based on the clothing, weapons, and location of Kyle Fluge at the start of Panzer Dragoon, that he and his compatriots were members of a Hunter tribe on the frontier or very close to the frontier.
Li-Vis[]
Based on maps from Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG Guidebook the Oasis-Nation of Li-Vis existed within the Frontier’s boundaries before it’s assimilation into the Empire in Imperial Year 45.
Forbidden Sea[]
- Main article: Forbidden Sea
The Forbidden Sea, the setting of Episode 5 of Zwei, is a striking location within the loosely defined southern borders of the frontier. Based on maps from guidebooks and the path Lagi and Lundi travel in Zwei, it can be surmised that the Forbidden Sea is located directly north of Georgius on the Continent, visible as the reddish/purple area on the topographical map.[2]
The Forbidden Sea is described as a “sea of death,” featuring the bones of massive dead creatures jutting from above the surface. It frequently precipitates a unique crimson snow in the region as well.[2]
Forbidden Zones[]
Forbidden Zones are areas within the Frontier that Die Welt von Panzer Dragoon Zwei describes as being so infested with Aggressive Lifeforms that even the Empire cannot properly explore them.[3]
Geographical Inconsistencies[]
There are, unfortunately, some geographical and cartological inconsistencies regarding the exact location of the Forbidden Zones.
Maps included in guidebooks for the first two Panzer Dragoon games depicted north as the left facing direction on map images, and maps in guidebooks for Panzer Dragoon Saga had north as the top of the image.
But when rotated, the locations depicted on some maps deviate from the accompanying text as translated[4]. The location of Forbidden Zones in the rotated image cover the Forbidden Sea, Georgius, most of Meccania, as well as all of the locations visited in Panzer Dragoon Saga.
An in-canon explanation for these inconsistencies is the approximately 48 Imperial Years between the creation of the conflicting maps. Die Welt was written by someone at the Imperial Academy after the events of Zwei, and the Azel Guidebook being written canonically by a Seeker in Imperial Year 121 after the events of Panzer Dragoon Saga.
