The Technology Destruction Faction were a group of people in the Ancient Age who opposed the use of biotechnology and environmental control technology. Unlike their rivals, the Technology Preservation Faction, the Technology Destruction Faction’s philosophy was that humans should not interfere with the laws of nature. They believed that events should be left to progress as they naturally would without a significant use of technology.
Although not mentioned by this name in Panzer Dragoon Saga, the Destruction Faction were referred to as rebels who opposed the Towers in the Old Diary of Skiad Ops Lundi. They were discussed in more detail in the Japanese Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG guide book.[1]
The Destruction Faction fought the Preservation Faction in the Ancient Age which lead to the human species almost becoming extinct. The Preservation Faction won the conflict, however the Destruction Faction was able to prepare future generations to combat the Preservation Faction’s Tower network. The Destruction Faction had inferior technology to their opponents and foresaw that the Preservation Faction would win the conflict. They stole an incomplete drone from the Preservation Faction called Azel who would later be used as a weapon against the Towers by future generations.
Although the Destruction Faction was opposed to technology, they developed a dragon program that was injected into Sestren which at that time had yet to be completed. The dragon program was created to lead an entity called the Divine Visitor, who was the only one who could free the world from the will of the Preservation Faction. The dragon program had knowledge of the Divine Visitor, so it appears that the Destruction Faction anticipated the Divine Visitor’s coming. The Seekers had discovered Ancient records of the Divine Visitor which were possibly created by the Destruction Faction, however Panzer Dragoon Saga does not confirm the author of the records.
Ten thousand years later, when Sestren detected the Destruction Faction’s dragon program in the Sestren system, the program was ejected into the physical world. In Panzer Dragoon Zwei, the dragon program entered the body of a mutant coolia named Lagi and the Heresy Dragon was born. The dragon chose Lundi, a teenage boy, as his rider. This was because, as part of their philosophy, the Destruction Faction had designed the dragon to be partnered with a human rider, a youth who had not been indoctrinated into either the views of the Preservation Faction or the Destruction Faction. This way, the Destruction Faction left the fate of humanity in the hands of future generations, rather than imposing the views held in the Ancient civilisation on them.
In Panzer Dragoon Saga, mercenaries unearthed the Destruction Faction’s drone, Azel, from an Imperial excavation site. Lord Craymen stole Azel from the mercenaries and attempted to control the Tower near Uru in a very similar fashion to the Destruction Faction’s rival. However, Craymen was killed by the Preservation Faction’s monsters, and Azel came into the possession of a group of people known as the Seekers. Like the Destruction Faction, the Seekers wished to destroy the Ancient technology, and prepared to use Azel for this purpose. Ultimately though, it was Edge, the dragon program’s fourth mediator, who made the decision to follow the Destruction Faction’s path, along with Azel who had begun to exercise independent thought. After listening to both Craymen, who followed in the philosophy of the Preservation Faction, and Gash, who followed the philosophy of the Destruction Faction, Edge chose the latter path for humanity.
Azel destroyed the Tower of Uru and opened the gate to Sestren. It is possible that the Destruction Faction programmed Azel with this goal in mind, however this has not been confirmed. Edge, along with his dragon, entered the Sestren data circuit and destroyed the Sestren being. With assistance from the Divine Visitor, the Destruction Faction’s dragon program was finally able to complete its mission, and the world became free from the will of the Preservation Faction.
