The Technology Preservation Faction is a name given to one of (at least) two factions in the Ancient Age. Although the Technology Preservation Faction was not referred to directly by that name in Panzer Dragoon Saga, they are discussed in the Japanese Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG guide book.[1]
Unlike their rivals, the Technology Destruction Faction, the Preservation Faction attempted to control bio-technology rather than seek its destruction. They attempted to gain complete control of the Panzer Dragoon world, participating in a conflict that left the human species on the brink of extinction. This event was known by later generations as the fall of the Ancient Age. However, in their war with the Destruction Faction, the Preservation Faction were victorious and their creations, the bio-engineered pure-type creatures, the Towers, and the dragons, continued to exist in the world for ten thousand years after the Ancient Age ended.
The Preservation Faction set up a network of Towers which purified the atmosphere so that life could continue and provided food and water for the surviving humans.[2] The Preservation Faction’s Towers also controlled the environment and populations within the ecosystem, including those of humans. This network was controlled by a central entity called Sestren who monitored the world from the Sestren data circuit. Although the Preservation Faction’s Towers and monsters were designed to protect the human species, they would also thin out any growing human populations in order to maintain control.
The Preservation Faction had created a number of humanoid drones, including the Prototype Dragon’s rider and a drone named Azel. However, before Azel had been completed by the Preservation Faction, she was stolen by the Destruction Faction. In the logs left behind by Azel’s creators in Uru, one member of the Preservation Faction stated that they hoped Azel would not become an instrument of destruction.
A dragon program, inserted into Sestren by the Destruction Faction, was created to end the Preservation Faction’s legacy. After the dragon program was rejected from the Sestren system, it took on a physical form in the body of a coolia. The coolia, which grew into the dragon Lagi, destroyed several Towers, before finally reaching Sestren using a gate opened by Azel in the Preservation Faction’s large Tower near Uru. The dragon defeated the core Sestren being that had been controlling the Preservation Faction’s technology, and with the assistance of the Divine Visitor was able to take the balance of power away from the Preservation Faction and back into the hands of the surviving humans.
Although the Preservation Faction were victorious against the Destruction Faction in the Ancient Age, it is unclear if any members survived into the era of the Panzer Dragoon games. In Panzer Dragoon Orta, the drone Abadd attempted to resuscitate his Ancient masters, and fans have speculated that Abadd’s masters were members of the Preservation Faction who had planned to return. However the identity of Abadd’s masters is not confirmed in Panzer Dragoon Orta.
